Chamber Myths

The Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce can provide your business with many valuable connections and opportunities to grow your business. We provide advocacy programs with elected officials and the community and provide marketing, sponsorship and advertising opportunities.  There are some myths, however, for any chamber of commerce.  Below you will find a short list of chamber myths:

Myth #1: Joining the chamber will lead to instant sales.

Reality:  While many businesses do in fact report almost instant sales from their membership in a chamber of commerce, this is not the norm.  Increased sales come from networking, marketing your product or service and creating lasting relationships that lead to word of mouth sales and strong referrals.

Myth #2: The only reason to join a chamber is for business leads.

Reality: Chambers of commerce provide many valuable services in addition to business leads.  Marketing opportunities, volunteer programs, community relations, business resources, education and government advocacy is a short list of what our chamber can do for your business.

Myth #3: Passing your business card out to as many people as possible is the best way to get your information out and network.

Reality: Strong, lasting connections prove more valuable for businesses looking to grow through networking and referrals.  Members want to do business with people they know, people they trust.  They do not want to be pressured into purchasing a product or service

Myth #4: Networking is the only way to grow your business.

Reality: A key method of business growth is brand awareness.  This can be achieved through advertising and sponsorship opportunities offered by the chamber.  Have a unique space? Host and event and get between 50-150 people through your doors.

Myth #5: Chambers are all bureaucratic and operate slowly and inefficiently.

Reality: As a customer-oriented, member-based organization, the service provided to our members is a reflection of the entire organization. Therefore, a prompt, efficient and timely response to issues affecting our members is our lifeblood.  Have a problem? Let us know!

Myth #6: Chambers are an extension of local government.

Reality: While a portion of our budget is supplemented through funding from the City of Chicago, we rely heavily on membership dues to operate privately, outside of the confines of city government.
