Cook County Commissioners Again Vote to Repeal Sales Tax

Updated: December 1, 2009, 1:45 p.m.

Cook County Commissioners successfully overrode President Todd Stroger's veto of the sales tax rollback.  The half-cent rollback goes into effect on July 1, 2010.

For the third time in the past year, the Cook County Board of Commissioners voted to repeal a portion of the County's sales tax - the highest sales tax rate in the United States - on Tuesday, November 16, 2009.  The 0.5% sales tax repeal, introduced in 2008 would lower Cook County's sales tax from 10.25% to 9.75%.

However, this vote to repeal the County's sales tax is different.

After a bill was signed into law earlier this month limited the vote necessary to override the Cook County Board President's veto of a bill by Governor Pat Quinn, the likelihood of President Stroger's suspected veto of the measure is low.  The County Board now needs 14 votes to override his veto, rather than 17 as in the past.
