Lincoln Park Hospital Redevelopment City Council Approval Moves Project Forward
CHICAGO (May 5, 2011) – On May 4, 2011 the Chicago City Council voted unanimously (44-0) to approve the zoning change required to transform the property that Lincoln Park Hospital once called home into a new, mixed-use development. The new development will feature condominiums, medical and professional office space as well as a Fresh Market grocery store.
“The Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce (LPCC) has supported responsible redevelopment of the Lincoln Park Hospital site for more than 14 months,” said Kim Schilf, LPCC President and CEO. “We commend Chicago’s City Council for approving the required zoning change and avoiding further delay to this project.
“This development debate has suffered through two meetings of the Chicago Plan Commission, two Zoning Committee meetings, two meetings of the full City Council and dozens of community meetings,” Schilf said. “While politicians and others spin their wheels on development, local businesses struggle to find new customers.”
The LPCC believes that at a time when economic recovery, job creation and the health and vitality of neighborhoods continue to be questioned, stalling new development is poor public policy and sets a dangerous precedent for future neighborhood growth. Additionally, the proposed development at the former Lincoln Park Hospital site will result in hundreds of thousands of new dollars on the City’s tax rolls during its most difficult of budget periods.
“It is important to note that the LPCC recognizes the concerns of local residents regarding truck deliveries and traffic; however, the LPCC urges residents to look at the big picture when debating new development,” Schilf continued. “The LPCC’s position will continue to focus on the resulting job creation, new customer base and spill-over effect for local shops and restaurants desperate for business. The LPCC will work to provide sustainable vitality to the businesses and residents who call Lincoln Park home and remain an active voice in this community.”
