FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce Wins Four IACCE Communication Awards
Chamber Honored with Two First Place, Two Second Place Awards

CHICAGO (November 16, 2011) – The Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce (LPCC) is honored to announce that the Illinois Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (IACCE) presented the North Side chamber with first place in two categories and second place in two additional categories at the third annual IACCE Communications Awards program on Thursday, November 3, 2011. The Communications Awards were presented at the three-day Fall Conference highlighting the successes and challenges chambers are facing today. More than 100 chamber executives from across the state were present.

“The LPCC is honored to be presented with four awards from the IACCE,” said LPCC President and CEO Kim Schilf. “Illinois is home to communities large and small, represented by chambers of commerce large and small providing innovative direction and communication tools; being presented an award among our peers is truly humbling.”

In June 2011, the LPCC partnered with TimeOut Chicago, the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Chicago History Museum, the Clark Street Special Service Area (SSA) #23, Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Vesta to develop a piece that highlighted the many places to go, things to do and insider information about the Lincoln Park neighborhood. This brochure was distributed through our community partners, the Chicago Office of Tourism, hotels and other high traffic locations. The brochure was also included as an insert in TimeOut Chicago magazines. Being presented first place for this inaugural piece recognizes its impact on the community. A cooperative piece being honored with first place by the IACCE recognizes the value of strong connections.

The LPCC was also presented first place honors in the IACCE’s Marketing Campaign category. This category honors chambers of commerce “for a media mix pertaining to promotion of the Chamber itself or a specific Chamber event.” Through things like business advocacy and a comprehensive marketing strategy, the LPCC strives to promote the Lincoln Park community and its businesses as much as, or more, than the organization itself.

The LPCC’s community guide and membership directory, Discover Lincoln Park 2011, as well as the website – www.lincolnparkchamber.com – were presented with second place awards for their content and layout in the mid-sized chamber group. These pieces are valuable in the promotion of Lincoln Park businesses and the neighborhood’s assets as well as connecting several audiences to the diverse information they need on a daily basis. Discover Lincoln Park 2011 was distributed door-to-door to 10,000 residents and shared with high traffic areas similar to the TimeOut Chicago piece.

“As chambers of commerce continue to adapt their programming and other services to local businesses, communication is paramount to the success of both the organization and its members,” Schilf continued. “While we accept these awards as a singular organization, we encourage chambers of commerce from across Chicagoland and Illinois to work together to support the needs of each other and their respective business communities.”

The IACCE created the Communications Awards to provide Illinois chambers of commerce access to statewide recognition for their materials as well as offering another way for chambers to learn from each other.

# # #

It will also be no taller than the current peak of Children’s, which is about 160 feet. Yet McCaffrey will play out its hand slowly, organizing opportunities for the community to give its input.

“Basically, there are concepts, but the developer doesn’t want to go over the community’s head,” said Padraic Swanton, director of marketing and communications for the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce. “From a chamber perspective, being a good neighbor perspective and a public relations perspective, it’s brilliant.”

Ald. Michele Smith (43rd)won a hard-fought campaign for her seat this year with a reputation for being hard-nosed with developers. She sees the redevelopment of Children’s as a vital opportunity for the ward.

“Children’s has communicated to the developer that they have to be willing to work with the community, and McCaffrey seems to have a reputation in that regard,” she said. “It’s going to be my job to help the community get the best development that they can.”

With a weak economy having slowed down potentially larger development deals downtown, not to mention its six-acre size and location in one of Chicago’s most affluent neighborhoods, the redevelopment will be one of the largest and most high-profile construction projects in the city in the coming years.

This was evident in the bidding with the hospital. Developers were charged with winning over the surrounding community that has a record of being tough on developers. One need look no further than the protest that erupted in redeveloping the old Lincoln Park Hospital to see what residents can slow down or quash if they feel it’s not in the community’s interests.

To avoid these kinds of disagreements, the city and the hospital held a series of community meetings, which in 2009 produced a set of guidelines. These included height restrictions, the preservation of certain buildings and the need for mixed-income housing.

Smith said input from the community will continue on her watch.

“In kicking off the development process, I’m holding a community meeting to bring people up to speed on where we last left them and what the process is going to be going forward,” she said. “We’re making those plans now for sometime in September.”

Smith said she’ll announce the time and date of the meeting on her website and ward newsletter. She remains optimistic going forward.

“McCaffrey seems willing to work with the community,” she said. “From my perspective, I’m committed to a development process that is transparent, open and very data driven.”

We help to link them to whatever connection they may need, whether it’s someone at city hall, another business vendor or a reporter.

As the Chamber of Commerce for one of the city’s most affluent areas, does the LPCC have a special influence in Chicago?

PS: We have a special responsibility. We’re the largest neighborhood chamber of commerce, and because of the reputation our neighborhood has across the city, we do try to take a leadership role. When issues come along that effect the North Side in general we try to rally other chambers together. We work very closely with Lakeview because we have sort of the same dynamic. For things like parking meters or issues affecting mom-and-pop retail, the line blends together pretty well.

What are some of the particular challenges facing Lincoln Park right now?

PS: For business owners, all they want are sales. The strength of the community is paramount to their success, but they need to worry about No. 1. A larger-scale challenge is keeping up with technology, especially social media. For a lot of folks, you either get it or you don’t. We’ve taken a really active role and provided some medium-level advice to businesses, but I think a lot of folks are intimidated by that, the way it’s changing the market and how they get to their customers. Understandably, they’re worried they’re missing out.

It’s tough doing business in Chicago, no one would deny that. The high sales tax, it’s expensive to park, and with the emergence of Amazon and huge web-based folks that offer free shipping and no sales tax, it makes it a challenge.

What role has the LPCC played in the redevelopment plans of Children’s Memorial Hospital and the vacant Lincoln Park Hospital?

PS: That one has sort of been beat to death, but we’ve taken a strong pro-business stance on the Webster Square Lincoln Park Hospital redevelopment. [Former Ald. Vi] Daley said the issue was closely divided in the adjoining neighborhood. The developers are members of the LPCC, and we’re taking a business advocacy approach. There are some ordinances that the current alderman introduced to try to hold things up, a liquor license moratorium so the grocery couldn’t sell wine or beer. We testified that that sets a bad precedent and holds up business.

The hospital development will bring in young professionals. That new customer base and job creation is are go-to message in supporting that development.

We worked very closely with Children’s Memorial. They’re one of our most active members, so we’ve been in all the meetings with the community. Our vision—one that we share with many—is to create a central gathering point for residents, families, businesses like the physical square in Lincoln Square, just as an example. We’d love to have a town center with a center gathering point, where you can have a farmer’s market, sidewalk cafes and live music.

The LPCC recently organized a roundtable discussion with new Ald. Michelle Smith (43rd). What issues were discussed at that meeting?

PS: We had 25 of the neighborhood’s long-standing business owners and key industries represented. We created this not just for business owners but also the alderman, to create a dialogue so she could get to all the people she needed to quickly. The first question someone asked about was a casino, so of course we started off on the most hot-button topic. But it was very much about what retailers can do to support the neighborhood. Lincoln Park has to balance a vocal and informed resident base with a strong business community. Those are two strong voices that can sometimes disagree.

This is something we haven’t done before. We haven’t had a new alderman since 1999. We wanted to make sure Ald. Smith knew us and had contact with key business leaders.

How did you come to work for the LPCC?

I used to work at a PR firm that represented city clients, but when I saw there was an opportunity here, I jumped on it. My parents owned a clothing store in the suburbs and my dad was the president of that chamber and active in it for years, so I had some background in this.
