The Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce (LPCC) is excited to announce The Arches, a new public art installation coming to Lincoln Avenue beneath the CTA tracks near Lincoln and Wrightwood. Construction begins April 20, 2026 between 2475 N. Lincoln and 2550 N. Lincoln, with an estimated completion date of May 29, 2026.
What are The Arches?
The Arches are four illuminated archways that will be installed on the sidewalk under the L tracks, featuring integrated LED sensors that activate a dynamic light display responding to both pedestrians and passing trains – creating a welcoming, interactive gateway that connects businesses along this stretch of Lincoln Avenue.
What Work is Being Done?
The project includes partial sidewalk replacement, replacement of the alley entrance off Lincoln, and installation of four arches on the sidewalk, two on each side of the street. Construction begins on April 20, 2026 between 2475 N. Lincoln and 2550 N. Lincoln, with an estimated completion date of May 29, 2026. Work will be completed in two phases to minimize disruption to parking and pedestrian flow:
- Phase 1: Northeast side of Lincoln Avenue (in front of UMI Dispensary), beginning April 20 and completed by Tuesday, May 12.
- Phase 2: Southwest side (near the Apollo Theater), beginning May 13 and completed by May 29.
What is the Lincoln Avenue Gateway Improvement Project?
The Arches are part of the broader Lincoln Avenue Gateway Improvement Project, rooted in the Lincoln Avenue Revitalization Strategy – a community-driven plan developed in 2018 to strengthen Lincoln Avenue as a thriving commercial corridor. A key recommendation from that process was to introduce distinctive gateway elements at important connecting points along the corridor. In 2022, the LPCC and Lincoln Avenue Special Service Area (SSA) #35 took a first step with a large-scale mural by artist Molly Zakrajsek and new fencing around the CTA substation. The Arches, designed by the consultancy PORT Urbanism, build on that foundation – together creating a brighter, more vibrant pedestrian experience that celebrates the corridor and draws people in. The project is funded by Lincoln Avenue SSA #35 in partnership with the LPCC and 43rd Ward Alderperson Timmy Knudsen.
We appreciate your patience as these improvements are completed. If you have any questions, please contact the LPCC at (773) 880-5200.
