Joan W. Harris Visiting Music Scholar in Residence, The Westerlies at The Francis W. Parker School

May 17, 2021 | 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

In the fourth year of the Joan W. Harris Visiting Music Scholars in Residence program, Parker welcomes The Westerlies, a New York-based brass quartet comprising four childhood friends from Seattle, Washington, known for its artsy fusion of diverse types of music, from chamber music to jazz to Appalachian folk and beyond.
In addition to their focus on music, The Westerlies are dedicated to music education and community engagement. While at Parker, the quartet will teach students about the role musicians can have in creating a more diverse and equitable society. Through exploring the origins of music, sharing how facets of their backgrounds and identities have shaped them as musicians and helping students develop their own musical voices, The Westerlies will show students the power of music in a democratic society.
On Monday, May 17, the group will share a public performance on Zoom. The presentation will examine the intersection of social justice with our collective musical heritage and how music-making can converge with activism. The evening will also feature an exciting musical performance with contributions from Parker students.
