Pillars of the Community: The Story Behind the Murals under the L

May 14, 2023 | 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

From Chicago’s first archbishop to NBA Hall of Famer George Mikan, iconic figures from Lincoln Park and DePaul University are immortalized on 25 murals wrapped around pillars under the Chicago Transit Authority’s Fullerton “L” stop. The public art project was conceived by muralist Brother Mark Elder, C.M., a faculty member in DePaul’s Art School, to recognize key figures and moments in the history of Lincoln Park and DePaul.

Learn how these colorful, 10-foot-tall paintings were created and installed by Bro. Elder and his students during the spring program of the Lincoln Park Community Research Initiative (LPCRI) on Wednesday, June 14. LPCRI will celebrate its 25th anniversary during the program.

The event begins with a walking tour of the murals. Meet at 5:30 p.m. by the Msgr. Egan statue in front of the DePaul Student Center, 2250 N. Sheffield Ave.

The reception begins at 6 p.m. in Room 120 on the first floor of the Student Center. Beginning at 6:45 p.m., program co-founder Fran Casey will briefly recap LPCRI's history and accomplishments. Bro. Mark Elder discusses the creation of the murals immediately after.

The event is free and open to the public.
