Ald. Michele Smith (43rd) Announces Retirement

After 11 years of serving Lincoln Park, Ald. Michele Smith (43rd) announced that she will be retiring from office on August 12, 2022, and will not be seeking a fourth term as Alderman of the 43rd Ward in next year’s municipal election. The news was announced in a newsletter where she explained, “My decision to retire prior to the completion of this term is a difficult and deeply personal one. At this point in my life, I have deepening responsibilities towards family and friends. These personal issues mandate that I step down now.”

Ald. Smith recently passed a major overhaul of Chicago’s Governmental Ethics Ordinance. She has been a dedicated public servant and committed to serving the Lincoln Park community.

The city’s process for selecting the next 43rd Ward Alderman has begun. Interested candidates must complete the application found on the site, as well as submit a cover letter and resume to aldermanicvacancy@cityofchicago.org or mail an application to City Hall. Applications are due 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 5.

The Mayor has also launched a short survey to ask what issues are most important to 43rd ward residents. Click here to take the survey.
