Community Coffee Chat! Summertime Support: LGBTQ+ Teens & Mental Health with Fusion Academy Lincoln Park

June 23, 2023 | 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM

LGBTQ+ teens have unique mental health needs, which can be intensified over the summer or out-of-school time. As a family member or adult, it can be difficult to know how to support the LGBTQ+ teen in your life. In this 90 minute session, Dr. Kristin Kazyaka and Benjamin Sauer will provide important information on how to spot mental health risks for LGBTQ+ teens, recognize possible needs for support and/or support structures, and ways to connect. The presentation is geared primarily toward individuals in clinical, support, and administrative roles and will provide practical ways to identify mental health risk and increase teen engagement. Breakfast and coffee will be served!

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding the common causes for mental health risks experienced by LGBTQ+ teens during summer months.
  • Recognizing signs and indicators that a LGBTQ+ teen may be experiencing mental health issues and how to support a teen experiencing mental health issues.
  • Recognizing signs and indicators that a LGBTQ+ teen may be experiencing a mental health crisis and understanding when to reach out for professional help and the resources available.
