Update: Chicago’s PTO Ordinance

Posted on December 13, 2023

Chicago’s City Council has passed an amendment that delays implementation of the recently passed PTO ordinance. The LPCC was part of a robust group of local chambers and business organizations led by the Small Business Advocacy Council (SBAC) that championed this delay to help our businesses have the time to understand and adhere to the requirements in the ordinance.

Listed below are the updates that were included:

  • provide a 6-month delay on the implementation of the new PTO Ordinance (businesses will be given until July 1, 2024 to comply with the new PTO mandate);
  • A limited, temporary reprieve from lawsuit exposure.

Chicago’s Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection (BACP) has released a draft of the Chicago Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave Rules to support the new ordinance.

Please carefully review this document. Businesses have until Friday, February 16, 2024, to submit comments to the BACP by either email to BACPLaborStandards@cityofchicago.org or in writing to Chicago Office of Labor Standards, 2350 W. Ogden Ave, 1st Floor, Chicago, IL 60608.
